Each studio will come complete with specialist equipment to support people with underlying health conditions to become more active and improve their health and wellbeing. Life Fitness circuit series power assisted resistance machines are being installed including abdominal curl, chest press, leg extension, leg curl, lat pulldown and shoulder press. The machines allow the user to select the resistance from zero (no resistance) to 10 – making them adaptable for people of all abilities – from the active aging community, teenagers and people with medical conditions. There will also be free weights, slam balls, a synrgy 180 rig system ideal for small group classes or to workout individually, suitable for any fitness level. The studios will support the delivery of the NL Active Exercise Referral Programme that helps people with health conditions develop the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to improve their health and wellbeing. The 12-week programme includes a one-to-one assessment, an individually tailored activity plan, and ongoing support from an assigned exercise referral qualified Health and Wellbeing Activator. After completion of the 12-week programme there’s an option to progress on to an additional 12-week programme. In addition to being exercise referral qualified, the Health and Wellbeing Activators have additional certification in cardiac rehabilitation, MSK, cancer, diabetes, mental health, and obesity and weight management. People who have already accessed the Exercise Referral Programme have seen huge improvements in their health and wellbeing. They said: "Every day is now better for me. I get up in a morning with a purpose and I look forward to the gym. I can walk further without being breathless and I can even manage stairs. The benefits are numerous - I feel 100 per cent better than I did six months ago. The support I get is first class." "It has given me more confidence and has helped my mental health as the company is essential to me as I live on my own. Also, I feel better for coming as it helps my disability. Without coming here, I would be less able to move about. It's the best thing I've ever done." “I feel much fitter and happier. Stacey has helped me feel safe. I wouldn't have gone to a gym before this, and now I go on my own. It has helped me physically and mentally and I look forward to the classes." “The Exercise Referral Programme has encouraged me to exercise a lot with lots of support from all the staff involved. At the beginning I was struggling to walk due to being diagnosed with osteoarthritis in my right knee, but by doing Good Boost regularly and being encouraged by staff, my mobility is so much better. I've now started walking on the treadmill and I'm able to walk so much further without being in pain. If I hadn't joined the Exercise Referral Programme I would have been in a bad situation. I've always liked to go out, but my knee was stopping me. Now I can do so much more walking and I can get out more." In addition to the power assisted equipment being able to support people with underlying health conditions, it will also be used for supervised Junior Gym classes, allowing more sessions to take place for 11 to 16-year-olds, getting them active by introducing them to a gym environment and workout. The NHS set out plans for the next phase of the covid- 19 vaccination programme - the largest and fastest vaccine drive in health service history. NHS staff began vaccinating care home residents and people who are housebound. The National Booking Service is now open, with the NHS inviting those who are most susceptible to serious illness from covid- 19 and those aged 75 and over to book an appointment. As with previous campaigns, the oldest and most vulnerable will be called forward first, with people able to book in online or through 119 as long as it has been three months since their last dose. Walk-ins will be available for immunosuppressed patients to self-declare to make getting the extra protection as easy as possible. Around 26 million people across England will be eligible for an autumn booster in line with guidance at GP practices and community pharmacies, with new sites joining the programme all of the time. The autumn booster campaign is among a package of NHS measures to prepare for winter, including ramping up bed capacity and increasing the number of 999 and NHS 111 staff to deal with any additional pressure. NHS chief executive Amanda Pritchard said: "The NHS was the first healthcare system in the world to deliver a covid-19 vaccine outside of clinical trials and is now the first to deliver the new, variant- busting vaccine. "Our fantastic NHS staff have worked incredibly hard to deliver 126 million doses to date and behind the scenes they have once again been preparing to deliver the latest phase with the same speed and precision as we have had throughout the rollout. "When the time comes, I would strongly encourage anyone who is invited to take up both an autumn booster and flu jab, to do so as quickly as possible - it will give you maximum protection this winter." The NHS will offer people the new next generation bivalent vaccine where appropriate and subject to sufficient supply being made available to the NHS. The original vaccines also continue to provide great protection and people should come forward regardless of the vaccine offered. NHS director for vaccinations and screening Steve Russell said: "This winter will be the first time we see the real effects of both covid and flu in full circulation as we go about life as normal - and so it is vital that those most susceptible to serious illness from these viruses come forward for the latest jab in order to protect themselves. “We know that our GPs and community pharmacies have been integral to the success of the NHS Vaccination Programme due to their locations and relationships with local communities, and so it is fantastic that so many have opted to be part of the latest phase of the campaign. "The NHS will contact you when it is your turn to get an autumn booster - please book in as quickly as possible when invited to give yourself protection this winter." The NHS will also begin rolling out the flu vaccine and encouraging eligible people to take up the offer from the first of the month where possible. Eligible individuals may be offered the flu and covid jab at the same time, with the doses approved to be co-administered. Hundreds of youngsters have taken advantage of free swimming across the six pools in North Lincolnshire as part of the council’s Summer Daze sessions. More than 6,000 sessions have happened as children from across the area have been swimming for free at the council’s leisure centres in Brigg, Crowle, Barton- upon-Humber, the two Scunthorpe pools at the Pods and Riddings and at Epworth Swimming Pool. The inflation busting programme made the sessions available for all under 16s for the six-week summer holiday. Cllr Rob Waltham, leader of North Lincolnshire Council, said: “It’s brilliant to hear just how many young people took advantage of the free-swimming sessions – it’s not the first time we’ve done it and it certainly won’t be the last. “These sessions really help hard-working parents keep their children occupied in a safe environment.” Cllr Carl Sherwood, cabinet member for Safer, Stronger, Communities – Rural, said: “Swimming is a really important life skill, and it is also a really good way for children to stay active, keeping them fit and healthy while they have lots of fun too.” The Summer Daze free swim sessions are part of the NL Active summer holiday activity programme that also includes discounted 3G football and racket sports, junior gym classes, badminton coaching, and other pool activities such as snorkelling, sea scooters, mermaid / merman training, pool inflatable and fun splash sessions, and crash course swimming lessons. As well as help her to build positive relationships with family members and friends so she can develop her own network of support ready for independence. “The young person staying with me was able to settle and feel at home. The ‘Let’s Get Ready for School’ events have been hailed as a huge success and left families feeling confident and prepared for their child starting primary school. Parents were able to speak to a variety of professionals such as health visitors, children’s centre staff, early years, library and adult and community learning services as well as some schools, local nurseries, and pre-schools. The events provided support, advice, and guidance to help prepare children for school, including: storytelling, toilet training, healthy eating, and routines, as well as details of before and after school care. Children could take part in crafts, rhymes, singing, reading and received a free goodie bag, including a copy of the book ‘Starting School’ that was funded by a KCOM Community Grant. One parent said: “It’s great that all the information you want to know is all in the same place.” Another parent said: “It was great to see the schools and be able to ask questions. We loved all the activities for the kids making it fun and informative.” Due to the huge success of both pilot events, a further event is being planned for the spring 2023 for all families of children starting school next year. Getting children ready for school is a big priority in North Lincolnshire and part of the ‘Getting the Best Start’ plan, which aims to ensure children reach their full potential from birth until starting school. Issue 37 15 Enabling resilient and flourishing communities16 NewsDirect New offensive in war against litter The litter wardens patrol areas of North Lincolnshire and anyone caught dropping, throwing or depositing litter and leaving it on the ground will find themselves hit with a fixed penalty notice. Cllr David Rose, cabinet member for the environment, said: “We have launched our Green Future strategy which details our efforts to ensure that we leave the environment for future generations in a better state than it is today. “This strategy is all encompassing, touching the lives of every person here now and those who will call North Lincolnshire home in years to come. “Huge efforts have gone into developing these proposals and an incredible amount more will go into ensuring we deliver a cleaner, greener North Lincolnshire – yet despite this, some people still persist in acting in an anti-social way by dropping litter – it is nothing short of disgraceful and the offenders need to know that we will not stop until they do.” A new offensive is being launched across North Lincolnshire as the council’s crack-down on litter louts intensifies. Hundreds of bins across the county will be doubled in size and emptied more frequently, enhancing the network of more than 1,500 already in place. Alongside this, mass education programmes and public information campaigns are to be backed up by a new zero- tolerance approach to fining as wardens issuing £150 fines have been instructed to show no leniency. Cllr Rob Waltham, leader of North Lincolnshire Council, said: “Communities are fed up with those small numbers of people who think others should clean up after them – the impact is huge but will not be tolerated. “A great deal of effort goes into keeping North Lincolnshire tidy – the council already spends vast sums of taxpayers’ money to clean up other people’s mess and there are many conscientious people who come together and get involved in litter picks on a regular basis. “Despite these best efforts, and the fact we are now going to have to spend more to increase bin sizes and the number of collections, people still think it is acceptable to drop their waste when they are done with it – it is not good enough consequently, we are stepping up the fining regime.” Eighteen-months into a two-year trial of fining people £150 if caught dropping litter, more than 2,000 people had been fined, with some stung for more than £400 after refusing to pay, only to be slapped with additional fees in court. Be too good to waste Don’t be a waster! The less waste we create, the less strain on the environment. Try these simple changes: Switch to rechargeable batteries. Freeze leftovers (27 per cent of rubbish in general waste bins is food waste). Stop junk mail – the Citizens Advice Bureau has help on how to do this. Use a reusable drinks bottle and fill it up at home. Put shopping bags in the car, in your pocket and your bag so you don’t have to buy a new one every time you shop. Buy in bulk to reduce packaging. Compost leftovers – you can swap your brown bin for a free composter as part of our Grow Don’t Throw scheme. Go to the Home Composter page of our website to make the switch. . Get clear on plastics Recycle plastic bags and wrappings at local shops and supermarkets Until now, recycling plastic bags and wrapping has been difficult and confusing. These plastics aren’t yet collected at the kerbside and if they are put in the red recycling bins, they contaminate the waste. The soft plastic in bags and wrappings clogs up the recycling machinery and costs hundreds of pounds a month in penalties. Out of 311,000 tonnes of plastic wrapping that is placed on our shelves, only 6 per cent is recycled. That’s why UK supermarkets have joined forces to form the Repeat The Cycle campaign to collect one of the last plastics that can’t be widely recycled at home. Local stores now have specially designated bins or receptacles for soft plastics. This includes: By recycling together, we can have a positive impact on the planet - all part of our commitment to the Green Future policy. Issue 37 17 In North Lincolnshire our priority is for children to stay safe and well in their family and have access to opportunities in their school and community. Family Adoption Links North Lincolnshire is searching for loving families for children of all ages and would particularly like to hear from those interested in early permanence, adopting older children or siblings. All children have different needs and that’s why we need to hear from adopters from all walks of life who have the love, energy and compassion to make a difference. To help you decide whether adoption is for you, here are answers to common questions about the process. Do I have to own my own home to adopt? If like many people, you live in rented accommodation, that’s fine. We’ll check to ensure your accommodation is appropriate for the age and number of children you’d like to adopt. Do I have to be married? If you’re adopting as a couple you don’t have to be married but you must have lived together in a secure relationship for over two years, so we know the child or children will be cared for in a stable environment. Can single people adopt? Absolutely! We’ve recently placed two brothers with a single adopter and they are thriving. Our friendly social workers follow the ethos that ‘all sorts of children need all sorts of families’. Do I have to be employed? All applicants are assessed on their individual circumstances, so it’s not essential to be in employment. What is important is that you are financially stable and can provide love and support to any children you adopt. Will my health condition or disability prevent me from adopting? Not necessarily, we look at everyone individually and work with you to identify how you can meet a child’s needs. I’m gay, can I adopt? We have helped many gay people become parents and we accept applications regardless of sexuality or gender identity. LGBTQ+ people often bring relevant skills and experience to children, and we positively encourage applications from this community. I’m already a parent, can I adopt? Sibling relationships are among the most valuable connections in a person’s life; being a parent is not a barrier to adoption. We’ll consider the impact of adoption on the child and others in the family to ensure a happy family unit. What support is available? Family Adoption Links offers a range of free advice. This includes help with Adoption Support Fund applications, access to a social worker and regular communications. Find out more by booking on to the free online Adoption Information Event on Thursday 6 October at 6.30pm. Book via the website: www.familyadoptionlinks.org.uk Think you can’t adopt? Think again…great free resources to help keep you on track at every step of your journey. “It’s also a great opportunity to get outside and enjoy some of the special scenery we are fortunate to have here in North Lincolnshire, not least our Green-Flag award winning parks.
