< PreviousYOUR POLICE AND CRIME COMMISSIONER JONATHAN EVISON I’m pleased to bring you the latest update from my office on the work we are doing to improve community safety in North Lincolnshire. In October last year I published my Police and Crime Plan for the Humber area, which outlined my vision to work together more effectively to deliver improvements for our area. When I talk about working together that means all of us, from my own office who commission services and award grants to improve communities, and scrutinise and hold the police to account for their service to protect us all. It means working closely with other agencies such as local Councils, the Fire and Rescue Service, the NHS and the Community and Voluntary sector. Most of all it means working with you, our residents, to understand what matters to you where you live, your concerns about crime, the welfare of young people, how safe your streets are day and night, how you can get involved in making a difference and what we need to do to make it happen. I strongly believe that policing should be done with communities and not to them, which is why I am reassured that Humberside Police are continuing to deliver the Humber Talking programme, with officers and PCSOs knocking on thousands of doors across our area to speak to residents and act on their concerns. Results have included Operation Galaxy which has made hundreds off arrests, disrupted organised crime groups, confiscated criminal assets and taken a large amount of illegal drugs off our streets. BEING YOUR ADVOCATE My role is to be the voice of the public and ensure the police are answerable to the communities they serve. Humberside Police have made great strides forward in the last few years and were recently awarded the honour of UK Police Service of the Year at the Public Sector Awards, but there is still more to do and I will continue to support and challenge the Chief Constable as he seeks to improve the service. For my own part, I want to know how our communities are feeling and if you are seeing improvements. I published my Police and Crime Plan last year after carrying out a survey of public opinions on crime and safety, it’s important to measure progress so I recently launched a refreshed survey and will do so annually, you can take part by visiting my website. I have visited many communities since I took office meeting local groups, Councillors and representatives. Many of the issues raised are the same wherever I go, such as drug dealing, anti-social behaviour, road safety and keeping our young people safe from exploitation by criminals. I feed these back to Humberside Police through my regular meetings with the Chief Constable and our Accountability Board meetings where we agree actions and improvements. Jonathan with Councillor John Briggs at Scunthorpe Armed Forces Day in July 20PREVENTING VIOLENT CRIME I have always been committed to attracting investment into our area to improve the lives of our residents and create new opportunities. In my last article I mentioned that we had been invited to apply for Government funding to create a Violence Prevention Partnership in the Humber Area. I am delighted that we subsequently secured over £3.5m from the Home Office to host and develop the partnership here. There are already eighteen similar units which have been operating across the UK over the last three years and we have been evaluating their successes so we can replicate them in our area and develop our own programmes to cut violent crime; whether that be knife crime, drug-related violence, domestic abuse and violence against women and girls. This partnership between local agencies will not just seek to deal with the aftermath of violence but to identify the root causes and start to change the culture. I’m very keen to see more programmes for young people to engage them in positive activities such as sport and music. Across the summer I visited a number of local youth groups and sporting clubs and witnessed a real appetite to change the perception that young people misbehave because there is nothing for them to do. I’m excited to see how we develop the partnership moving forward. INVESTING IN YOUR COMMUNITY Earlier this year I launched my Community Safety Fund to offer grants to community organisations for local projects that will cut crime and anti-social behaviour and improve feelings of safety. My office received over 70 applications and our team have been working hard to select the best projects which have now started to receive funding and do some valuable work which I’ll be covering in future articles. You can get more information about the fund on the Community section of my website. One of the most important issues that is always raised, particularly by our rural communities, is speeding in our towns and villages. Over the last decade, despite regular enforcement and educational programmes carried out by our road safety partnership, there has been no significant reduction in the number of people killed or seriously injured on our roads. A key aim of my Police and Crime Plan is to have safer roads for all users and there are various factors than can cause fatalities including drink and drug driving, the use of mobile phones and excessive speeding above the limit. The Community Speed Watch scheme was developed in 2019 following a surge of interest by town and parish councils to play a part in helping the police to change the behaviour of some road users who drive above the speed limit through their communities. The scheme has gone from strength to strength with over 600 trained volunteers now giving their time to run 47 different schemes across our area, with 18 located in North Lincolnshire alone. I recently spent an afternoon with some Speed Watch volunteers in a rural village, we recorded a small number of drivers travelling above the speed limit in the village despite the highly visible volunteers being in place and I was encouraged to hear that since they started their operations the number of speeding motorists has halved which is great news. I would encourage anyone who has some spare time to consider volunteering and set up a scheme in their area, you can get more information on the Community section of my website. The new safe space on the second floor of St John’s Market was opened as part of National Breastfeeding Week. It provides parents with a discreet area to feed their babies and aims to support local breastfeeding mothers to confidently feed their babies in public. All new parents are welcome to use the space, where they can sit and relax in the comfortable chairs, and enjoy the soft toys, and books with their baby. Cllr Julie Reed, cabinet member for children and families said: "It can be very daunting, particularly for a new mum, to feed her baby for the first time and in front of other people. So, providing a comfortable, supportive, and welcoming environment is vital for new parents. “The new area is the first of its kind for Scunthorpe and is a safe space for new parents to come and relax without the pressure of having to buy anything and where they can feed their baby in a calm environment.” Alison Jollands, North Lincolnshire Council’s Public Health Coordinator, said “There are several health benefits from breastfeeding such as helping to protect the baby from illness and infections. It can also protect mothers from breast and ovarian cancers and heart disease. “Previous reports and feedback from parents indicate that feeding a baby in public has not always been a pleasant experience and can be one of the reasons why a parent decides not to breastfeed or moves to bottle feeding early.” For advice and support with breastfeeding call the North Lincolnshire Council Baby Feeding Team on 07900 567052. Cllr Rob Waltham and Holly Mumby- Croft MP open the new safe space.
